hw 9 freakonomics

In the film freakonomics, there were certain intellectual moves that the writers made. One of them was to tackle an issue for about 10 minutes and show all the poblems that issue created, and then they would sort of show a "what if" situation. There was a lot of 2 sided arguments which basically made the movie have noo definitive meaning, it was just made to show how we can view certain things. Another move was how the writers used evidence like first hand witnesses accounts of the topics, and also getting profesors who debate eachothers ideas and put them both in the movie to express differences, but really never saying who was right. The 3rd tool that was used was the ay in how the writers always tried to make the film funny rather than make it a intellectual film. I think the moves in that was to create the interested effect. When movies like this are made, they have to have some sort of comedy or a break off of all the facts and add some life into the movie or people get bored easily. his may also have been a way for the directors to sort of insult our intelligence, like by giving stupid situations and then having weird drawings and even weirder people explain the findings, its sort of like not adding any intelligence to the film but just a bunch of nonsense and no logical thoughts.

This film was highly dependent on test subjects, such as the 2 high school kids who were interviewed along with the other 900 who weren't. Also having the everyday person describing what their opinion was on a topic. The film was also dependent on commentary and visual cartoon illustrations to get ther point across in a simpler way so that us kids can understand better and not be completely lost.

i agree with the statement that Freakonomics serves as an inspiration and good example to our attempt to explore the "hidden-in-plain-sight" weirdness of dominant social practices. This film tackled a few topics thatpeople hogt about but could never understand because they had no evidence. his film helped me see that bribery does impact youth adn that it can change someone's life if used properly.

the sprouts project wheere we grew our own food was pretty interesting to me, even though my sprouts didnt grow at all. The reactions i got from people were all the same though. The sprouts tasted like grass and wre pretty nasty to eat. The process semmed cool to me. i felt that it was a great learning experience and i wish i did it properly and got better results.

chapter 8
In this cahpter i read about how these slaughterhouses are digusting places and how they provide unsafe working environments. These places abuse its laborers and they commit crimes on a daily basis but are not punished for it. The slaughter houses are where the most injuries can occur and the least amount are reported and discussed. These corporations found ways to beat the system and that was by trapping its workers in a secrecy bond. Also in a way, they blackmail and bribe the workers. They give wokers prizes or doing good and then if the people are hurt, they get treated and are told to go back to work asap and they are treated like trash. The people who got hurt working for these compainies should at least be respected, but they are usually outcasted and looked at as insignificant.

gems: sexual harrassment in slaughterhouses are very common in which the female workers are preyed upon and disrespected physically, even sometimes by their bossess with the body parts of animals, just so that these workers can get promoted.

To me slaugterhouses are notonly slaughtering animals, but they slaughter humans. The number of accidents per year is incredible and sad, but its like these people experience what the animals do. I think it is very sad that this work has to be done and this whole business of food is corrupt and it just upsets me that i cant do anything about it.

chapter 7
Colordo was turned i into an execution town. There were meat packing facilities built where up to 100,000 cattle can be stored and killed/ processed for meat and animal food. There soon became a rise in disasswembly lines. These were the line in which the animals were cut up by machines and packed with great speed. These facilities became places where there would be thousands of animals murdered on a daily basis. Also these were the places where these big corpotations would hire immigrant workers because they worked for cheap and very dilligently.

Gems: Before Greely became a Meatpacking town it was a utopian community of farmers.
IBP put new slaughterhouses in rural areas and close to feedlots but far away form labor unions

I think its crazy how we just kill animals for business and then the people that are killing the animals for us are treated like garbage while the companies sit back and get rich. the workes are what make the companies succeed and for them to work and then in top of that be treated poorly and still contiue to work shows that these corporations d not care about yo. If you were desperate for a job then you would do this work and you would not complain.

chapter 6

These big food corporations are taking over the land that has been run by farmers for many years. The farmers have no choice but to sell their land and animals and start over again. people losing their land also lost their businesses. Farmers had to find a way to protect their land and keep their families finacially stable. These ranchers are becoming deporessed and suicidal.

Gems: the suicide rate among farmers and ranches is about 3 times higher than the national average.

I think this idea of killing yourself because your ranches are doing bad and the way that these farmers live miserabl because of fast food chains is crazy. I fell like these ranchers would be happier if they were to always have a back up plan if their first plans were to get ruined.

chapter 4/5
precis: these chapters are about what its like to start a franchise and how operating it is sort of like working for other people as well. Also how it is hard to veto the rules of the major operator's rule
gems:"give up their former lives and devote themselves to mcdonalds." pg 95

I find it crazy that these corporations are like mini governmentsd of their own. Its like the companies are their own countries and the head of the company is the president of everything food related.

chapter 5:

this chapter was aboujthow french fries basically became the baby to almost every fast food joint. Also how they taste so good and they are consumd at a rapid rate. Tis chapter also hits on how french fries were becoming experimented with and put through various tests to see what the strengths and weaknesses were of the fries. J.R Simplot foresaw the frozen food business as providing meals of the future.

Gems: the 1950's was the glden age of food processing

This guy j.r simplot was like he founding father of food experimenting and he was basically the man who put these onion rings and fries in my freezer and freezers all around the world. It makes me think where would we be without food that could be frozen and reheated.

hw 7 reading response

Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser

chapter one is about how this man eric schlosser met the sort of father of fast food, and the man who created the carl's jr chain. He speaks about how the nice towns where it was so green, became littered with fast food joints. IT is also about how fast food joints originated from the simplest forms of becoming vendor to chain owners

Chapter 2

this is about how the evil corporations are taking control of the children's minds so that now kids will remember these fast food places, the characters that endorse it, as well as the food they serve. It is about the manipulation of the children's mind so that they will force their parents to buy them the unhealthy food.

My big question is why is it that these parents know what these corporations are doing but they are still purchasing the foods.

America is littered with fast food places, it is just so hard to get away and resist the temptations when they surround you in every direction.

This reminds me of the burgerking commercial when the cooks gave these people from like a 3rd world country a whopper, and the people ate it and loved it. It is like people are zombies to this fake food and we all love it because of the ways that it is advertised, even though the people had never ate a bk burger, the first bite sold them immediately.

hw 6 food diary.

9/29/10

today for lunch i ate 2 slices of pizza. I choose the pizza beacause it taste pleasing and there is a 10 second waiting time for it. I like the way that it is cheap as well. I dont like how it is boiling hot when i get it though. I usually get pizza during lunch. This was no exception. I enjoyed it a lot but i felt pretty nasty. I hate eating while walking, which is what i was doing with my pizza. It was also raining a bit that day so along with my pizza, there was rain water in it. But i still ate it with pleasure because afterall i did pay for it. I looked up the calorie count for the pizza and it sed 1,900 calories per slice! i literally ate for 2 days, because i had 2 slices and on top of that i had a snack which was a soda from 7 11 and some crackers that had about 300 calories. i felt so nasty but i felt satisfied for that day. When i went home all i had to eat was a little plate of noodles and broccoli. it tasted kind of salty which made me feel like i was eating salt water, but as disgusted as i was i still ate it and i dont kno why.

9/30/10
today i had a subways sandwhich for lunch, it was a blt on italian bread, with a side of chips and a drink. It was delicious. i looked at the calories and it had about 540 calories altogether. It was good and i felt kind of good. i got my veggiwes in the sandwhich and there was no grease dripping everywhere. i guess it all soaked into the bread. It was a great lunch and i will definitely get it again. I was thinking to myself why is it that i eat a lot? i came up with the answer of, money. I eat a lot so i waste my money on something for myself so I could be satisfied. I feel like it has to do with greed and its like if i have the money why not buy 10 dollar lunches everyday. i feel like if i weren't to have a good amount of money in my wallet, i woud eat less portions of things and maybe make me slimmer, but then i think about it and its like im just going to make up for the missing calories when i go to my grandma's house. Later on that night after i hung out i came home and i was hungry so i called my brother when i was near my building and i told him to come down so we can get some food. We ended up going to white castle and went crazy. I ended up spending 22 dollars on all the food and it was kind of worth it. The food looked so delicious. I knew that i at least ate 3,00 or more calories that night. I felt so good though. It was like a drug. I eat when i feel like it, sometimes when im not really hungry. When i am with certain people though i tend to never eat for the whole day. I have no urges to eat and i feel great. When i am with other people like family, i tend to eat a lot because i feel more comfort eating with them around.
